The scholars have mentioned a number of opinions in determining the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Some say: The Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) are his wives, his children, the Banu Hashim, the Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib and the freed slaves of all of them. Some have said: They are the Quraish. Some people say: Ale-Muhammad is the pious people of Muhammad’s Ummah. Some say: Muhammadan in all ummahs.
According to the foremost opinion, the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) will be included in the Ahl al-Bayt. The proof is that Allah, after instructing the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to keep the veil, said: The angels said to Sarah, the wife of Ibrahim (AS): رَحْمَتُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ : ِّلَّا آلَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ إِلَّا امْرَأَتَهُ (Meaning: But Lot’s family. Will be included in the family.
Banu Muttalib: According to a narration from Imam Ahmad and according to Imam Shafi’i, “they belong to the family of the Prophet.” According to Imam Abu Hanifa and Imam Shafi’i, Banu Muttalib will not be included in the family of the Prophet. There is also a narration from Imam Ahmad in support of this view. The leading opinion in this matter is that Banu Mottalib belongs to the family of the Prophet. Narrated Jubayr bin Mutaim: I and ‘Uthman bin Affan went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allaah! You have given Banu Muttalib a share from the khums (fifth) obtained from Khyber; Didn’t give it to us. But we and they have the same level of relationship with you. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Undoubtedly, Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib have equal status.
Ahl al-Bayt will also include Banu Hashem bin Abd Manaf. They are: Descendants of Ali (R), Descendants of Abbas (R), Descendants of Jafar (R), Descendants of Akil (R), Descendants of Al-Harith bin Abdul Muttalib (R). Zayd bin Arqam (R) said that one day the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood up to give a speech at a place called ‘Khum’ between Makkah and Madinah; That place was the source of water. He first praised and glorified Allah, gave advice and reminded of the Hereafter. Then he said: ‘Gentlemen! Know, I am a man! Maybe the time has come for the messenger of my Lord to come. When he comes, I will respond (to his call) and leave. But, I leave two things between you. The first is the Book of God; So that there is guidance and light. So hold fast to the Book of Allah. – Inspired by the Book of Allah. He said: And my family. I remind you of my family. I remind you of my family. I remind you of my family. Hussein said to him: O Zayd! Who is his family? Aren’t his wives his family? He said: Surely his wives belong to his family. However, his family is those for whom it is haraam to accept charity after his death. He said: Who are they? He said: They are the descendants of Ali (R), the descendants of Akil (R), the descendants of Jafar (R) and the descendants of Abbas (R). He said: Is it haraam for all of them to accept charity? He said: Yes. [Musnad Ahmad (18484)]
The document concerning the freed slave is: Hadith narrated from the freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), Mehran, who said: They belong to the freed slaves of any tribe. “[Musnad Ahmad (15152)]
Therefore, the people of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) are his wives, his descendants, the Banu Hashim, the Banu Abdul Muttalib and their freed slaves. GOD is Omniscient.
